The Best Batteries for RV’s: 12 volt vs 6 volt

A recreation vehicle will use two different types of batteries. A starting battery for the engine and a deep cycle battery sometimes called a “coach battery” used to run the lights, TV & pumps, etc.

Starting batteries supply power to the engine starter, are generally 12 volts and rated by their cold cranking amps or CCA. The CCA rating is measured by the amount of current (number of amperes) a lead acid starting battery can deliver at zero degrees F for 30 seconds, while maintaining at least 7.2 volts.
Because starting batteries have thinner plates than 6 volt deep cycle batteries, deep discharging the 12 volt battery damages the plates and reduces the batteries life cycles.
Starting batteries should never be used for deep cycle applications.
12 volt Dual Purpose / Marine Batteries are a mix of starting and deep cycle battery properties. Use for light deep cycle applications only.
Deep Cycle 6 volt Batteries have thicker plates and are able to deliver long term energy. If your RV lifestyle is traveling park to park then a 12 v deep cycle battery with 80 – 100 amp hours will work.
But if you camp in remote places and need as much stored energy as possible, you should use two or four 6 volt batteries = 220 ah & 440 ah respectively.

Voltage on a fully charged battery in good condition will read 2.12 to 2.15 volts per cell (about 12.75 volts for a 12 volt battery, or 6.40 for a 6 volt)

Specific Gravity Readings to determine State of Charge:

12.75 & Above = 100% Charged
12.60 to 12.74 = 85 to 100% Charged
12.40 to 12.59 = 75 to 85% Charged
12.20 to 12.39 = 50 to 75% Charged
12.00 to 12.19 = 25 to 50% Charged
12.00 & Below = Fully Discharged
